The Elusive Poet
I saw a poem on a wall
and it was like a sweet caress
from someone that I didn't know,
from someone that I'd never met.
If I'd have seen the poet there
I would have liked to say I cared,
but maybe, in a kind of way
that elusive poet really stayed,
for the poem made me think a bit
and try to make some sense of it.
And if that's it and if that's all
the elusive poet said it all.

Rememberance Day
In the midst of silence we are one,
recalling our past, its misdeeds.
Young lives snatched cruelly,
not cleanly, not kindly.
The silence brings no peace,
it's a haunting bell, clanging.
It sings the same old song
and chimes each year
as we mourn the toll,
the deaths, the atrocities.
Then, as always, we drift off
into our tomorrows,
forgetting, suppressing __
smothering the silence

July
In July I caught a butterfly,
it's peacock markings
and its gentle wings
fluttered in my hand
to tickle and delight.
In July we saw the flowers bloom,
raising heads to the sun,
opening their petals
in the strong summer heat,
a maze of colours.
In July I watched you mellow,
red hot flames flickered and died
as did your ardor
against a backdropp of milky clouds
that hid a golden sky.

New years resolution
From tomorrow I'll
eat cream cakes
throw away my clothes
size 8
I'll promise never
to exercise,
it just another
thing I hate.
Recycling is all
in the past,
stuff global warming
up your arse
I'll buy a Merc'
and ditch the bike
and stay out late
way past midnight.
Yes from tomorrow
I'll be naughty

Striking
It was like striking a match,
we lit up, then fizzled out.
Relationships, some last, some don't,
that's how it is.
Can't say I find it surprising
but years later I met him
in the supermarket,
buying lingerie!
Oh yes, for himself, no missus.
I had kind of guessed before
when I caught him
trying my knickers!
He always did look better
than me in underwear.
Very smooth skin ____
striking.

Star spotting
Kings Cross / St Pancras,
the train draws in
as passengers stand ready
to disembark.
I sit still, waiting,
bored with the rush
my naked eyelids still heavy
from sleep.
Stepping down
to platform five
I spot Ronnie Corbett,
I think.
He's in front
in a grey Mac'
and stops at the café door
to let me in.

Splat!
I watched the woodlouse cross the floor.
It slowly crawled to the patio doors,
then, it tried to creep under my seat!
I caught my breath, I nearly screamed.
I couldn't possibly leave it there,
Good God, it might climb up the stairs!
So I hid, was quiet and as it moved
I clobbered it with the heel of my shoe!
Well I didn't dare sweep it under the mat
so I made damn sure the woodlouse went splat!

An elusive love
Holding you is like the sliding of fine rain between my fingers,
I know it never ever lingers, but I try, I try
Holding you is like the rainbow in the sky, too wide, too wide.
your colours in an arc above my head, so high, so high.
Holding you is like a never ending dream, I float, I float
but in the morning when the sun begins to rise
I turn to see your face upon the pillow next to mine; alone.

For Sylvie - an old lady died....
An old lady died
quietly, at hospital
and was buried
that afternoon.
I never had a chance
to say goodbye,
never cried
but
I feel a pain
in my heart
unseen
by public eyes.
An old lady,
who never said
how ill
she'd really been

Suddenly the night
The leafy glades of her youth
were tumble down green while
her eyes adjusted to the light.
The woods of adulthood were
stark while she fretted over monetary
injudiciousness.
In late middle age when all about
was calm she saw the beauty of the trees.
So much colour in just one leaf,
lush, and so was she.
Autumn came too quickly
teasing her dimming sight.
Life ebbed away
and suddenly the night.
