Lviii
I thy servant, and to thy servant born
I speak of fathers who stick to their deeds
To guide their children through a field of thorns
This I pray is the father’s only creeds
To love and protect, to guild by God
To teach thee the way of the holy Lord
To shine his light upon every done fraud
To praise him with every award
I am a father, to a father born and
Pledge my life to thee, my only true song
I am my brother’s keeper, love in hand
Never shall I accuse a man done wrong
My wife, my children, my Lord praised
My God, my family to thee I pay.

When I Sleep
When I sleep
Where do I go
I go where
The Blue bird
Is red
Where
Red
Is
Blue
In the head
And the door
Opens on
A red sky
When I sleep
Where do I go
I go where
There is no where there
And the door
Have eyes
To see

Fare-thee-well, fare-thee-well I say to thee
I’m off to see what I see by ocean
Breeze that blows, ocean breeze through me see
That rhythm me rock me motion, motion
I’m bate my hook with a crocked look, look
I’ll cast my line against the motion of time
The ocean so wide I will over look
More then half its half measure, its rime
I will feast upon my poetic catch
Of rime and meaning now much refined
No moralizing within here attach
Just knowledge of itself assigned
The ocean’s deep that we must daily sweep
But let me now to that deep glory leap.

Back when Galilee
Back when Galilee
Was the place to be
And lives like the living of it
Grey clouds dropped down
To your knees
And passion sweet
To be yet hard
By the passion trees
Driven warm by
The sun’s heat
To discharge their
Sweet load
Swelling to be
Eaten as show
Pf blessed and felt
Bliss dealt like this
Malted end of
The delivery
Missed when
River overflows

You who find all joy a vain illusion
That no richer heirloom can be thine own
Who think that joy is a sinful lesion
Do not toward your one and true God disown
Make you peace with the Lord and he shall give
Thee regress, all that by you he’ll address
He has the power toward you to forgive
In the joy of that power is progress
Joy’s to be found in his mercy full light
Thou has magnified thy people and won
Do by him as you will him to do right
True, by him shall you seek out your action
Lord protect us with the arm of thy grace
It is you who in life we do embrace.

Baby I Love You
Baby I love you
Baby I always will
Baby I adore you
Baby you gives me such a trill.
I am walking and the world is full of light
The sidewalk is icy
The birds are in flight
I am singing to myself
Some song left over
From my dream
Baby I love you and I always will
Baby I adore you
Baby you gives me such a trill
When it comes to my heart
Baby to know what is right
The thieved of love are always ready for the fight
I’ve put on my armor and it fits tight
For you I will do battle
Far into the night
baby I love you

I Wished Upon My Life Today
I wished upon my life today
I wean upon my life today
I bet upon my life today
I borrowed upon my life today
I feasted upon my life today
I fell upon my life today
I paid upon my life today
I plead upon my life today
I frowned upon my life today
I flew upon my life today
I smoked upon my life today
I shitted upon my life today
I pissed upon my life today
I pass upon my life today
I sneezed upon my life today
I sneaked upon my life today
I asked upon my life today
I ate upon my life today
I wept upon my life today
I won upon my life today.

The mother’s grace that I do awake
The mother who forever looks after me
In golden light of the blessed daybreak
To crimson evening, in both I do agree
Mother of the children under her wings
Mother of trees, of rocks and of the rivers
Of thee Mother Nature dose my song sings
All that we know, to know thou art cleaver
With it has thee fashioned all living creatures
Under thou grace, because of it all things are
Deep within thy mercy you seek to capture
We poets who think thee God are not bizarre.
O Mother Nature, mother of us all
Before thee do we stand in utter awl.

Man, why must thou do evil to evil?
Why must your fellow man fall by your hands?
Why in you evil you be so agile?
Why evil in your hands by sure commands?
Thou shall not kill, you have surely forgotten
Should a life for a life be your true creed?
In Americus, something is rotten
Rotten to the core, your murderous deed.
Night after night by the TV’s bright light
We are told daily that someone has died
We hear of those who only kill for sprite.
True, in heaven your soul shall be denied.
O man, where forth are thy truly petty
You stink of murder, your soul is sweaty.

I’m sitting outside smoking a joint
I’m sitting outside smoking a joint, right
It is an early Wednesday morning in
Early September in late
St. Louis, right
The sun is at my back, two degrees
Pass an old silver maple tree
The last of the three mulberry threes
Is growing in the alley
I got coffee, cigarettes
Weed and beer to celebrate
Poetry, right
It was September
Of 1968 that I wrote my first poem.
41 years hence I’m still on point
People say of me that I can not
Keep a job, but here’s proof of my
Fortitude. If I seem proud
Of myself it’s because I am
It is an occasion of celebrating me
A poet to my poetry.
