Bible in Poetry: Gospel of St. John (Chapter 20)

It was the day one of the week;
When dawn broke, Mary Magdalene
Came early to the tomb, though dark
And saw the stone large, set aside!

She hurried to Simon Peter,
And other one, whom Jesus loved,
And said, ‘The Lord has been taken.
We don’t know where they have put Him.’

So, Peter with the other one,
Both ran towards the tomb at once;
The other disciple reached first,
But did not go into the tomb.

He bent down, saw the burial clothes!
Then Peter went into the tomb and saw
And saw the burial clothes lie there;
The cloth that covered Jesus’ head
Lay rolled up in a separate place.

Bible in Poetry: Revelation 11

The Two Witnesses:

1Given a reed-like measuring rod,
I’as told to “ Measure God’s temple,
Altar, and count the worshipers,
2 And to exclude the outer court,
That was given to the Gentiles.
They’ll trample the holy city
For forty-two months at a stretch;
3With my power, my two witnesses,
Will prophesy for a thousand,
Two-sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.'
4Two olive trees and the two lamp-stands
Stand before the Lord of the earth.
5If anyone tries to harm them,
Fire will come out of their mouths
And devours their enemies.
This is how those who harm must die.
6These men have pow’r to block the sky,
So that, it won’t rain at that time,

Bible in Poetry: Revelation 17

The Woman and the Beast:

1One angel who had the bowl, then
Came to me and said, 'Come on please,
I will show you the punishment
Of the great prostitute, who sits
On many waters of the earth.
2With her the kings of the earth had
Committed adultery and
The inhabitants of the earth
Became intoxicated with
The wine of her adulteries.'
3The angel carried me away
In the Spirit to a desert.
I saw a woman sitting on
A scarlet beast that was covered
With blasphemous names all over,
And had heads seven, and ten horns.
4The woman dressed in purple, scarlet,
Glittered with jewels that she wore,

Bible in Poetry: Galatians 4

As long as heir is just a child,
He is not diff’rent from a slave,
Although he owns the whole estate,
Until time set by his father,
He has guardians and too trustees.

When we were children, we were slaves,
Under the basic rules of world;
But when the time had fully come,
God sent his son, born of woman,
Born under law to redeem all,
In law to rights receive of sons;
Being sons, God sent the Spirit
Of His One Son into our hearts,
Who calls out ‘Abba’ or Father;
No longer are you slaves but sons,
And being sons, God made you heirs!

A Tribute to The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI

Message: “But, let there be one flock and one Shepherd.”

The world has got a Pope anew!
His name is Joseph Ratzinger;
On April, twenty-fourth, Sunday,
He’s duly installed as the Pope,
Successor to Pope John Paul II.

A German cardinal old-aged,
A Theologian ’yond compare;
A man of wisdom, silver-haired,
A conservative of the Church,
He said Inaugural Mass that day.

St. Peter’s Square was thronged by crowds
Of people of all ages, sex-
That numbered five lakhs from countries,
To witness his Investiture:
A life-time’s rare phenomenon!

Bible in Poetry: Gospel of St. Matthew (Chapter 11)

When Jesus had given commands to each,
He went away to towns to preach and teach.
When of his works, then John from prison heard,
He sent his disciples to Him and asked,
‘Are you the one to come or Messiah
Or should we be in search for another? ’

Jesus said, ‘Tell John, what you hear and see.
The lame can walk, the blind again can see;
The deaf can hear, lepers are cleansed truly;
The dead arise alive, the poor have peace;
Proclaimed is Good News to them poor with ease.
Blessed’s the one who takes no offence at me.’

Then Jesus told the crowds about John’s deeds:
‘In desert, simply dressed, on locusts feeds
A man called John, more than a prophet stayed,
To tell about God’s kingdom, God had made.’

‘This is the one about whom it is writ:

Bible Stories: Job (Chapter XXXI)

What lot to man does God provide?
‘What to give? ’- How does He decide?
For unrighteous, is it not woe,
And misfortune, for Maker’s foe?

Does He not watch keenly my ways?
Does He not count my footstep’s pace?
Let God’s just scales weigh me for once,
Thus, He will know my innocence.

If I’d in falsehood ever walked,
And tongue in deceit ever talked!
If I’d at times, gone ev’r astray,
And heart had followed my eyes’ way…

If stained are hands of mine some way,
And I had lived a life all gay,
Then, may I sow to others eat,
And uprooted get plants out neat.

Bible in Poetry: Revelation 22

The River of Life:

1 And then the angel showed to me
The river of water of life,
As clear as crystal, and which flowed,
From the throne of God and the Lamb,
2 And down the city’s middle street.
On either side of river stood,
Tree of life, with twelve crops of fruit,
And yielding fruit on every month.
The leaves of tree healed all nations.
3 No longer will there be a curse.
The throne of God and of the Lamb
In city, and servants serve Him.
4 They’ll see His face then directly;
His name will be on their foreheads.
5 There will be no more night at all.
They will not need a lamp-light’s help,
Nor light of sun, for God gives light.
And they will reign forever, ev’r.

Bible in Poetry: Gospel of St. Mark (Chapter 4)

The parable of the sower:

As Jesus taught by the sea-side,
A multitude had gathered fast;
He sat on a boat at sea therefore;
While people stayed ashore!
He taught by mostly parables;
To know the Kingdom, it enables.

Behold, a sower went to sow;
Some seeds fell by the way-side but;
And quickly birds devoured them.

Some fell on stony ground, sans soil;
The seeds did sprout but didn’t have roots;
The scorching sun withered them all!

Some fell ’midst thorns, which choked them,
And they could not yield any fruits!

Bible in Poetry: Revelation 1

Prologue:

1The revelation of Jesus
Christ, which God gave John to show all,
His servants, of what must take place.
He made it known through his angel,
To his beloved servant John.
2 John testifies to things he saw—
The word of God, the Father and
Testimony of Jesus Christ;
3Bless’d is the one who reads the words
Of prophecy that’s here-in writ,
And blessed are those who hear it,
And take to heart whatev’r is writ,
Because the time is very near.

Greetings and doxology:

4John, to Asia’s seven churches:
Grace, peace to you from Him who is,
