Kurt Hearth

Jetty

Like a jagged boney finger,
a rampart creating tranquility.
Extending from land’s end,
isolating calm from tossing sea.

Times, from Nature grown
others from arduous labor, created.
A welcome sight in long glass eye,
answer to petition, mariners often prayed.

Within its boundaries, stillness abides.
Winds fall away to soft breeze.
Unruly swell shall be calmed,
seafarer secured from tempestuous seas.

Licking and healing its wounds,
in quiet lagoon spent ship will rest.
Safe from the tossing and tumult,
suffering from angry sea’s worst.

Survival

With unspoken admiration,
of Nature's enduring strength.
From the mountain's barren crag.
I behold the lone tree growing.

Renegade to the slate gray,
of the roughewn granite features.
Bright greenness of life,
displaying mute rebellion.

Defying unending swirling tempest.
Whipping wildly, bending, twisting.
Standing tall, strong, independent.
With each lull, reaches for the sun.

To the precipice, root's fingers anchor.
Searching deep for sustenance.
Bold testimony, this lone outcropping.
Survival, ultimate goal of all life forms.

Grains of Sand

Rolling in receding back
I watch the ocean’s waves.
Wondering what do they bring
or take away.

Reaching to my feet
some sand I scoop.
Through my fingers
those tiny grains flow.

Some so smooth
as if their journey long.
Others jagged sharp.
Had they not traveled far?

I muse to myself
What tales could they tell?
Relating their travels
carried by the seas.

Wonders

After the night is through
HE puts the moon and stars away.
Before we know it
sends the sun to wake the day.

HE wakens and coaxes the flowers to bloom.
Their beauty all may see.
From somewhere a songbird singing.
We hear a lilting melody.

HE adds the soothing sound
of a flowing rippling stream.
All this beaury could only be
from magic it would seem.

Listen from a newborn babe
hear its happy cries.
See HIS love reflected
in that baby's mother's eyes.

Dune's Confrontation

Within the fold
of my cowl. Fragile eyesight
is shielded to the sun searing heat.
From the bleached sands
of the ever shifting dunes.
Scanning 'cross the beckoning
mysterious landscape
so silent, veiled sirens
seductively whisper.
Challenge to conquer that
ever changing panorama.

In the sand at my sandals.
Must I retrieve,
that gauntlet flung by
non stop firey zephyrs?
Surely to decline
would justify mortality's
failings.
In the eyes of cynical deities,

Neptune's Tomb

Beneath restless wind and wave
deep in its watery crypt
silent gray hulk
eternally sleeps.

What tragedy on some high sea
doomed this traveler
to rest evermore.
In Neptune's Tomb.

Ceaselessly.
aquatic guardians patrol
in out and around
this muted monument.

What secrets
and stilled testaments
do they protect
do they conceal?

Creation's Demise

'Cross empty ocean of feelings aimlessly, I drift.
Canvases of my mind, sails hang slack.
Floundering, in the yen to catch
any gust, of creation's tempest.
Which, might stretch taut my canvas,
deliver me to inspiration's haven.
On the swells of thought, rising 'n' falling, I drift.
My sentinel of creativity,
scans the horizon of opportunity.
To detect any token, of that elusive species.
Poetic conception.

Faithfully, I cast forth my net of imagination.
In attempt to snare such literary prey.
With intent, to enlarge my aquarium of verse.
Time and again, yield is scarce to nil.
Still, I must persist,
lest my lust for creation.
To extinction sadly fades.
Abducted, in the undertow of failure.

I Stubbed My Toe

Within the conquest I pursue,
along the thoroughfare of Life.
At times, have arisen occasion,
against obstacles, I stubbed my toe.

These hurdles, oft' I thought,
cross my path with pupose placed.
To alert and expose these pitfalls to me.
In my Master, my faith prevailed.

When loudly, oft' I would complain.
For all, to know my pain.
Or in silent prayer petition.
From outstretched Hand, grant me strength.

The tenacity I lack...instill.
to overcome the anguish from pain,
which visits, tempting me to stray.
Heal my affliction, grant I complete my quest.

Imagination's Field

Within its bounds, naked canvas stretched.
Before the display, the lad stood.
Adorning the wall, ornate frame hangs.
In concentration, young man observes the void.

Forced by curiosity's command.
for the source of his deliberation.
I searched sans satisfaction,
In despair, I queried the youth.

“Sir, within empty frame you survey,
what do you perceive? ”
Without addressing me, responded.
“I see tall mountains, endless restless seas.”

“I see naught, for this frame's canvas is empty.
How might you see these sights? ”
He turned, facing me and remarked.
“Sir, within the frame, a great deal I see”

Storm

The sea from its shore,
shows me white crested chop.
The sky above, an angry ceiling,
of dark rolling turbulence.

Broadcasting, tumultuous ferocity,
punctuated with bolts, of white hot energy.
Invisible winds swirl, harassing the sea,
restless swell infuriated, to wrathful wave.

What nemesis, goaded Lords of the deep,
to churn emerald waters, to thrashing fury?
Waves, whipped to gigantic infuriated breakers,
to pummel relentlessly, unprotected shores.

How long, before rogue winds subside?
This tantrum pacified, wildness calms?
When may the mariner, safely unfurl sail?
To seek the favor of calm following seas?
