After Reading O'Neills's 'Long Day's Journey Into Night

This house in our home
Of grief and tears
Is filled with foam
Of spoiled kids
After Depression years

A father's dream
A sister's scream
A brother's cry
The dream is dead

The mother's sigh
The dream is alive
But our love is dead
Another brother said

The flowers bloom
Let them bloom
Let them hide our gloom
Then he fled.

Whispers From Bones

THE WAR MACHINE
IS QUITE OBSCENE

THE WAR MACHINE
IS QUITE UNCLEAN

BUT
THE WAR MACHINE
WILL NOT STOP

BECAUSE
THE WAR MACHINE
MUST BE FED

THE WAR MACHINE
MUST HAVE BLOOD

THE WAR MACHINE
MUST HAVE DEATH

Pathetic Romantic

You are a pathetic romantic
Running to paradise to find
A jar full of delight
Trying to escape the phantom pain
Under this earthly rain
You want to be in some tavern of eternity
You are a pathetic romantic searching for
Paradise
Wanting to be in some tavern of
Eternity
To escape the phantom pain under this earthly rain
You are a pathetic romantic running to
Paradise
Trying to find a jar full of delight.

On the Death of a Louse

A Treacherous Thug
Hid under a Rug
And drank Malt Liquor
From a Pewter Mug.
He was Waiting for
The Wife of the House
To Watch him Beat Out
The Brains of a Louse-
Her Two-timing Spouse!
The Husband Walked In-
And then the Wife-
Who Watched the Treacherous Thug
Liquidate her Husband's Life.
After the Murdering was Done
The Treacherous Thug had to Run
Because the Wife pulled out an Enormous Gun
With which she Peppered the Treacherous Thug's...
BUN!

Death In Three Parts

Though my body wither
I’ll take my soul hither
To find a time and place
To write another poem
Before I sleep
The long sleep and
Count no more sheep.

My body has begun to wither
And so my soul must go hither
To find a time and place
To write another line
Before I sleep the
Sleep of No Return.

Ere my body wither and die
My soul must go hither and fly
To a new time and place
To write one more line
Before I sleep the

Happy Animals

Happy is the Toad
Not Squashed on the Road.
Happy is the white Rabbit
Not trapped in some Cabinet.
Happy is a desert Camel
Not covered with Enamel.
Happy is a wagging Dog
Not lost in some misty Fog.
Happy is a Giraffes's neck
Not caught in some Lariat.
Happy is a Blue Whale
Not drowned inside a pail.
Happy is a Siamese Cat
Not stuck inside a Derby Hat.
Happy is the Gila monster
Not upon a roller Coaster.
Felicitous is an Elephant
Not murdered by a safari hunt.
Happy is the Fly
Not caught in a Lie.

Some Thoughts While Reading Rumi

Go walk into your garden & pick the tiny
Red fruit of the very old sun
It is just one plant & quite small
But go walk into your garden & pick the tiny
Red fruit of the sun
Go walk into your garden & feast on life
Because life is a feast
Go walk into your garden & pick the little
Red fruit of the very old sun
It is just one plant & very small
But go walk into your garden & pick the tiny
Red fruit & feast on life
Because life is a feast
Go walk into your garden
No matter how small
It is still a garden.

Monroe Louisiana

On the green, green farm
In green, green Monroe Louisiana
So green, green
Wet-luscious green and alive
So green after the rain
So bright green and clean
Just passing through
On my way to tomorrow
But so green today and yesterday
It was on that stranger's green, green farm
And I didn't stay long
And I didn't expect someone
To fire that shotgun right next to me
The barrel pointed out the front door
Into that green, green world beyond.
There were hot springs
On the green, green farm
In green, green Monroe Louisiana
Back in 1973.
