The Covenant
You were cold, I gave you warmth
You were anxious, I held your hand
And you allowed me, to hold you
Close to my heart and I did you no harm
I was cold, you gave me warmth
I was anxious, you held my hand
And as you liked, you held me
Close to your heart and did me no harm
This was the bargain, only lovers can make
This was the covenant, entered in desperate hope
Late at night in that place we created
But the demons could not be held at bay

Sisters, Joy And Sorrow
How to express that which
cannot be put into words
I could write how do I love thee
all day long and still not convey
how I feel about you
Yeats' wrote of Joy and Sorrow,
sisters, each ready to step in
and take their place at your side
How quickly one can go
from the heights of joy
to the depths of sorrow
I have been intimate with
both sisters and right now,
Sorrow is my mistress
How I wish for Joy
to return to my life
How I long for you my muse.

Mea Maxima Culpa
I am sorry for what I did and did not do
I am sorry for what I said and did not say
If I could undo what I did I would
If I could not say what I said I would
If I could do what I should have done I would
If I could say what I should have said I would
I almost did what I should have done
I almost said what I should have said
I thought there would be a better time and place
I thought we had world enough and time
I was wrong
Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa

Since You've Been Gone
I learned this; it goes on
This irresistable desire
Why was love denied to me
Beauty stood on my path
But though nurtured carefully
She walked away
And I brood in moods most foul
I wanted her thoughts, her dreams
But you cannot have
That which cannot be given
I wanted to know her secrets
But you cannot know
That which cannot be known
I wanted her to come away
And take my hand
But now I am alone
And my world is more full of weepin'
Than you can understand

Paris
Thinkin' of Paris
Always begins and ends
With thoughts of you
and how you brought
even more light
to La Ville-Lumière.
The combination
of your beauty
and the city's
was overpowerin'.
You were lovely
and I was lucky.
Even now, these thoughts
I cannot imagine
bein' without and yet
I am forlorn, mon chou,
that I am without you
and we are without Paris.

Love First, Live Incidentally
Zelda was right
Which makes love
The highest purpose
The reason for bein'
If you have love
Life will take care of itself
No worries man
Be happy
If love finds you
Grab a hold
Till your knuckles turn white
And do not let go
If love does not find you
Take a chance
Reach for it
And do not give up

Unchained Desire
Thunder rumbles, lightnin' flashes closer
Wind picks up bringin' cooler air
Porch swing sways back and forth
Unchained Melody plays on the radio
Unchained desire rattles the heart
Wistful feelin' closes in
No one to sway with
No one to play with
Lyin' to myself sayin'
It could never have been otherwise
This is the way it had to be
This is not a dream
Wavin' me farewell
Crushin' out my life
Stretchin' out in despair
It is not a dream

And A Softness Came
And a softness came from her touch
And I set aside my old tragedies
And let the touch fill me
Full to the bone
Now what comes next
Do I write about
How that touch touched me
As none ever had
But that has been written
Before and often
By much better poets
Than this cowboy
Or do I write about
How I miss that touch
But to what purpose
To wallow in self pity

Love Consists
Love consists in this:
That two solitudes,
come together
and discover
they cannot be
without each other.
Two solitudes
that protect and guard
each other always.
Two solitudes
that touch each other
in ways they never
ever touched before.
Unrequited love
consists in this:
That two solitudes
come together

Dreams and Desires
So much has been said
So little has been said
So much remains to be said
Or does it
Which is better
To act out one's desires
Or keep them to oneself
Hidden in one's dreams
How to know
Which deisres, when acted on,
Will bring more pleasure than pain
More good than grief
