Rabia Minhas

From Eve's Perspective

It was not through choice
That I was fashioned from his rib.
He was the one with need of me.
And, it was not by choice
Where I would live.
HE saw to that
And, so, it would be.
Then a name was given to me,
And from that day forth, I was Eve.

It was from then on
That we dwelt in the garden.
The flowers in my hair
Went unnoticed.
My sparkling eyes
He did not see.

It was in innocence, I was tempted
Through smooth, cool, crispy, red and golden skin.
I took a bite and let a torrent

You Didn't Disappoint

The fact that I can't breathe
Doesn't remind me that I'm alive
It reminds me
Why I died inside
It was good
The dullness
It was protective
So, what if I existed as only driftwood
At least I was moving
Drifting from spot to spot
Traversing large bodies of water
Not feeling a thing
I had no moisture penetrating into my pores
Threatening my existence
What
Now
Now that every nerve ending screams with pain,
Exposed raw flesh..
Pour some more salt on..
Burns like acid..

It Was Good Then

I go back to my childhood
And images come flying at me
These water color memories
That have faded to a certain extent
With the passage of time
Fade no more
But become no brighter.

I remember things in
Sunshine yellows
And frosty blues
Minty greens
And lavender hues.

I remember smells.
Is it even possible to remember
Smell?
But, I swear I do.

Days had their own smell

Pleading

I'm knocking at your gate again
Open up
Won't you let me in?
I'm standing
Waiting
Watching to see some recognition please.
Yes
It really is me.
Open up.
Won't you let me in?
I waited for you
Let the years pass by
I listened to hear
The
'It's all right.'
I'm knocking at your gate again
Bloody knuckles
Scraped skin.
Panic is gaining hold on me
Please

Read Me, You'll See

It's tough…
When other people get in the way
Of perfectly clear communication
And confuse the heck out of you
When you were doing so well
Saying what you needed to say
Even though
Sometimes
What you are trying to convey
Is limited
By the limits of the words at your disposal
It can feel stifling
Like, you wish you can say so much more
I guess
As long as you can somehow
Express
Something
It's better than nothing
But
Other people

The Lost One

The smoke from the incense rises

To envelope me and transport me

Into another reality.

My body's perfume becomes mingled with

The exotic fragrances of a fairytale land.

Cumin, clove, lemon, Corriander, ginger, and garam masala.

I look down and see
my feet

Shackled with the bell adorned anklets the dancers wore

I see my hands covered with red

All for the One

Emotions melt
Like slivers of chocolate on the tongue..
She rises
With the luminosity of a thousand burning suns
And enchants the world
With her dance.
Music swells and descends
With her every step..
She controls it
It does not control her..
Yes, in the intricacy woven finer than a spider's web..
You can not tell
Whether
She inspires the music
Or it inspires her..
He sits
Watching
Mesmerized
Waiting for their eyes to lock..
She does not need to see him

Wanting

She can't help it
The wanting of him
A simple glimpse
Across a crowd
She hides her smile
As her imagination
Goes
Into
Overdrive
Goosebumps rise
Along her flesh
Somewhere deep
A quickening begins
Her heartbeat accelerates
Her blood warms and
Begins to pulsate
As she
Holds on
Always
Yearning

So, You Think You've Found Me

I am not here
Not in these words
not on these pages.
I know..
You think if you read
Enough
Of what I write
You'll know me inside and out..
One small problem though
(I say this as I smile)
I am no longer
Who I use to be
When I use to be
The 'She' who wrote this..
I don't publish until I've grown
From the poem I use to be
If I was her at all...
Sometimes the 'She' you read
She isn't me at all
But a friend,

Letter to A Friend

The problem is, friend of mine
Somewhere along the way
You became...
Somehow,
Important to me.
The problem with that is..
There is a problem with that
And, I don't want to contemplate what it could mean.
So,
I push at it.
And
Shove it away.
I stomp on it
Trying to make it..
While
Simultaneously
Afraid it will break.
This
Whatever
It is..
