Spheres of Fire

We are instruments of an old design,
Used beyond our known control,
Bobbing on the breeze divine,
Along with secrets of the soul!

What years have passed, like shapeless clouds,
What fortunes have been lost and gained,
Through shifting sands and faceless crowds,
Where fragments of our dreams remained!

What mockeries we make of time,
As hapless tragedies transpire,
Yet still we claw and scrape and climb,
Towards those heavenly spheres of fire!

Specks of Dust

Specks of dust, that's all we are,
Just like the stars, so small and far,
And through the cosmos we'll be thrust,
To echo, rupture, burst, combust!

Like grains of sand, dewdrops, jewels,
We span the land like molecules,
Caught between demise and treasure,
With eyes that shine like pools of pleasure!

This onslaught will be over soon,
This poem lost, like ashes strewn,
Then on some gentle, temperate gust,
We'll dissipate, like specks of dust...

The Apple Cart

I shook and spilled the apple cart,
Oh no! What will we do?
Fall apart or pick them up?
Absurd, my dear, it's true!

Don't argue, for you cannot win,
Nor can you ever lose!
It's all a game, a sad mirage,
A story in the news.

'Oops, ' you say, 'I'm sorry, '
Then shrug and pull a face,
As everybody laughs it off,
And goes back to their place.

Nothing matters, never did,
Never will, my dear,
So kill yourself or fall in love,
Live! Then disappear.

A Prison Paradise

A prison paradise of planes,
Sulfur-spewing cones, foreboding drains,
Deadly dysentery, parasites,
Sad, tortured days and sleepless nights!

Protect the children for awhile, until
They come of age, then watch them gag and spill
And writhe in vile contempt before their death—
Blood-flooded lungs gasping for breath!

O fallen ones, I bid you fond farewell,
And where the journey ends no one can tell,
But blindly guess between two vast extremes—
A desert and a tundra of dead dreams!

An Old, Wilted Rose

Through wherever life takes me, and whomever I meet,
And whatever life makes me, either bitter or sweet,
I've not one further doubt 'twill all end in defeat,
There's no pleasant way out, save to die in one's sleep,
But I won't scream or shout when life breaks and forsakes me and shakes me about,
I'll most likely slump over in my aged leather seat,
With no one to gloat on and nothing to tout,
Save this poem I've written, (of which I'm quite smitten) ,
And an old, wilted rose at my feet.

Anodyne Potion

Under the spell of an anodyne potion
A dream sequence played in my head,
And some of the characters moved in slow-motion,
And some looked as though they were dead.

A large-breasted woman with red lipstick on
Ran nude through a rainy, cold night.
From what was she running? Perhaps from the dawn,
Which taunted her with mad delight!

Then as gulls began gathering on a scrapheap
To pick over something's remains,
I awoke in my bed from that deep state of sleep
And returned to my miserable chains...

The Sleep of Ages

O how I long to sleep the sleep of ages,
To slumber deep in cold Egyptian tombs,
In cobweb-covered catacombs and cages,
Encased by dust and musty old mushrooms!

My lonely, jaded soul I'll trade to Time,
With fragments of my faded hopes and dreams,
Exchanging them for something more sublime-
A toothless skull to hold my folded schemes!

And outside life still rumbles, roars and rages!
But not for me, oh no, but not for me,
For I am deep within that sleep of ages,
So faraway, and happy as can be!

A Sense of Profound Ease

Swept upon some wild, ancient wind,
My soul was whisked away with utmost pleasure,
That no amount of math could ever measure,
And no amount of sorrow could rescind.

I drifted o'er rooftops, trees, and mountains,
And as in dreams the scenes were so surreal,
The snow, the sun, and raindrops I could feel,
As honeyed wine I sipped from marble fountains!

Then finally a gentle, temperate breeze
Lowered me back down to solid ground,
Where peace and joy and beauty did abound,
Allowing me a sense of profound ease.

Time Frame

Caged inside a tiny frame of time,
Out of which I sadly could not climb,
I spent my life in straining, aching service,
Then limped away— complaining, shaking, nervous.

Each day I put on costumes, masks, disguises,
And lived somewhere between ennui, surprises,
Scavenging the unforgiving streets
For smiling faces, treasures, secret treats.

And there, without direction, purpose, aim,
I clung so tightly to that mighty frame,
Until, at last, I was dismissed from service,
And flung headfirst into a burning furnace!

A Cauldron of All Things

A vision of beauty, a portrait of dreams,
The swaying of daisies, the splashing of streams,
Such beautiful music, playing in chorus,
The poems of Hesiod, Homer, and Horace!

The myriad animals, their wondrous faces,
Exploring the oceans and faraway places,
Swimming with Pisces, wrestling with Taurus,
Finding the fossils of Tyrannosaurus!

The eyes of a lion, the blood of an ox,
The heart of a hummingbird, the wits of a fox,
The skin of an elephant, so thick and so porous-
A cauldron of all things, bubbling before us!
