Lying Angel

A lying angel follows me
It is my shadow
Dark and bitter
A lying angel
Whispers my faults in my ear
She grabs them
In her tiny, white fists
And twists them
Around my body
Strangling
A lying angel
Laughs
As I struggle
She teases my hair
And pokes my cheeks
A lying angel
Is my worst enemy
And yet
I still need her here
Because she is part of me

A Daily Walk to Work

I see him daily
He doesn't follow
He only stares
But that is pain enough
As I walk by him
I display the strength
Of a Spartan
Though I know
It's as weak
As a robin's egg
But those eyes
Those
Hungry
Begging eyes
Pull me closer
A cowboy's lasso
Around my waist
I rear back
A bucking mustang
But my strength

Trumpet Voice

I live to hear my father sing
People come
Far and wide
Gathering like anchovies in a can
To hear his deep, trumpet voice

My father burns a record
Neighbors and friends
Float from their lonely birdhouses
To hear his deep, trumpet voice

My father records a tape
The family sits in the living room
Under the golden chandelier
To hear his deep, trumpet voice

My father has a CD
My brother and I sit in my room
Playing Parcheesi
We open the player
