I am a solid black
The mystery ridiculed
And misunderstood
On the pages.
A solid black,
Resisting feelings
To contain the rages.

Enlightened,
And sharp at the edges
A solid black I am.

Before Twilight Dawns

He lays in repose
With a Purple Heart
Fought gallantly
Without a purpose
Without a cause
Expires before twilight dawns

He did not witness the parade
The banners and confetti
Honor below grade
Without glory

Doctor Birds

Sounds from the doctor birds
Resonate in my bones,
Taking me to glory
On unwritten melodies
And with notes so high,
Roosters dance
And mountain goats stop bleating.
Even the children
Are transfixed
By their orchestral hummings.

Your voice
Like bell tones
Rung unforgotten
Melodies in my ears.

Your life:
A text book for the ages.
On this side
Of eternity
Without a complaint,
You lived

When you are called
This heart

My Darling

My darling passed in a dream,
My world went with him.
All I have remaining are his bathing oils
And visions of his masculinity.

If only these withered hands
Could recall the times we caressed
It would suffice on this winter day.
Then I would not have to conceal
My sorrow with a smile.

Psalm

I am not in need
He is my provider
He admonishes me
For my benefit
I was broken
He restores me
I am righteous
He makes me so
I faced death without fear
He never leaves me
His statutes comfort me
I am surrounded by my enemies
I overcome
Good is my portion
I serve Him always

In Memory Of Aunt Julie

The love you sacrificed
For your mother and me
Will be remembered
For the ages;
And now
You are gone,
We hope you feel
The angels embraces.

I am still covered by the things
You taught me
Even though
The times of my youth
Are fading.

So dance with the saints
Until I see you
At the golden gate,
Just dance.

Transient Life

Since natural life is transient
I cling to your immutable words:
The living organisms
Powered to heal or kill,
Finding their targets
In hearts and minds,
Over lands and seas.

In the theater of my mind
Your transfigured frame
And outstretched arms
I see
Beckoning me come,
When my work on earth
Is over.
Here I come Lord.

Ode to Phyllis

My date moved on the dance floor
as if her life depended on it.
I tried to look cool
as I kept up with her.

At some point, I felt a stare
from the lady
sitting by herself.
The discotheque lights
did not reveal
the complete details
of her face
but somehow
I knew something
struck between us.

She is my wife
and the mother
of my children.

The Villainous Monk

Hopelessness in the bowels of men
Questions the purpose of life
With sleepless nights;
He is a villainous monk
Robed in deceit,
Drawing the curtains over lights;
A bloodless snake
Stealing joy throughout the ages.

Life is worth living
Irregardless of circumstances;
Maybe we cannot ressurect the dead
But we can love on you to death.
