Ron’s With Roma

He is gone
To that lone figure
Half blurred in mist,
Around the beach.

Their rods bow
Lines dip tentatively
Into rip and roar,
Dark beyond reach.

They speak silent
In wind fresh squalls
Parched lips touch,
Never a breach.

Loves’ of a life
And looking back
Their ruby sun’s aglow,
Both to each.

To Individuals

See them all
Hear the call
And one by one
Into line they fall.

Never question
Never doubt
Same old practice
O'er and o'er.

Then one questions
Then one doubts
Death to cynics
Drown him out.

Ask and question
Contest decision
Yours is evolution
From dissention.

To My Sarah

Seldom do we have together
As much time as I crave,
Rhyme and reason empty nests
And no sooner looms the grave, but
Happy days in each must dwell
In each lived as the last,
Learning from and of each other
Over short years slipping past,
Venturing on paths unknown
Ever mindful of the time,
You grip but slip into the stream
Of life the torrent raging strong
Upon a bed of dreams.

To My Angela

An angry shout may not be heard, and
Not all good deeds are observed,
Glad is the learned, pure, heart
Ever loved, oft alone, you are
Luminous with life's energy
And part of my soul projects
In you, myself, yourself I respect.
Long days, short years, bitter true
Only one chance to know you, this
Voyage without certain destination
Embarked with unknown duration, for
You I long to know
On terms as friends
Until my journey ends.

Year Of The Tiger

A gibbous moon
Of tired ochre
Leered from diagonal
Above the horizon,
One eyed cat
Out for vengeance
Harbinger of doom
War weary pariah,
Fire, fire coolly dimming
Spirit over landscape
Torn from Earth
Quickening the haemorrhage,
Above forest ghosts
Bleached as bones
Into history cast
Prey unto asymmetry,
Stalk the land
On silent paws
In Sun’s rays
Conceal thy fury,

Humane

There is only one animal
And let us speak plain'
Where the word humane
Has no domain.
A horse that is lame
After a fall
Will be put down
In no time at all.
Wildlife rescued from a fire
Half cooked, dying from the blaze
Will be released without debate
By mercy's needled fate.
An old companion animal totters
Prolonged with drugs and care
Until it is decided when
Its suffering we can no longer bare.
Could we not ask our suffering
Do you want exit from the pain
To be released with love and dignity
By the mercy and grace of the word humane?

Anzac Day 2005

Each time Anzac Day returns
I listen to the history
Solemnly reflect
On the deeds and outcomes
And usually shed a quiet tear
Mourning the losses
The massive sacrifices
And the futility,
Chill at the Last Post
Choke with pride
And whisper under my breath
The Ode of Remembrance
Hopefully connecting
To the spirit of Anzac
To nation, to history
To personal feelings
Of a debt accepted
But its full magnitude unimaginable,
A generation discounted by conflict
A cost too high,

The Sweetest Crime

After committing the forbidden act
Totally without remorse or conscience
She paused then licked the blade,
From back to edge
Along the diagonal
From heel to tip
Cold smooth steel,
Across the coarse textured tongue
Risked the wound of muted silence
Condemnation and isolation,
Cautiously peered guiltily around the room
Grew confident by being undetected
Energized with unfettered bravado
Perpetuated another blow
Plunged the blade deeper and twisting
Decisively withdrawing it to her lips
She was free
Overwhelmed with a sense of elation
Untouchable and above the law
The blade glinted menacingly,

Second of January 2006

Drove into Moruya the pre-beach
near coastal town, place
of my parents' retirement for fifteen years.
Their rented cottage re-occupied,
the garden no doubt not as it was
no one to fight the drought
and poor soil or indulge its subjects,
The shared grave went unvisited.
"Life is with the living" she would say,
so many are consumed by the monument,
but treat the living so appallingly.
Booked into the local pub,
had a beer at the near empty bar
spoke to the barman of my parents,
he'd not heard of them, but
knew the landlord.
An unimportant life, ordinary,
dispersed without trace,
the fate of all
quiet peaceful souls.

Once We Met

Once we met in a greasy spoon
A television hung from the ceiling
And drained its effusive ruin.

Once we met in a buskers croon
Bus stop hopefuls dead by tedium
Ignored his heart wrenching doin'.

Once we met in a naive swoon
Youthful dumb and thrilling
Pashed day an' all night through an'...

Once we met in an old saloon
Seats sticky with life's lust lived
And sipped all revved and brewin'.

Once we met in a cow herd mooin'
Gentle giants unsuspecting
From where cruel protien's hewn.
