5. I Tend to Forget
My brains in decay
Bits have started to rot
It never remembers
The things it forgot
When I see a face
It can’t tell me their name
I explain I’ve forgot
They say bless what a shame
It never reminds me
Of an important date
Anniversary and Birthdays
All get their cards late
I’ve tried really hard
To get my brain thinking
But I’m coming to terms
With the fact that it’s shrinking

4. Blow me down
The North wind blew on Monday
As the East wind got the flu
The West wind blew on Tuesday
As the South wind never knew
The North East wind had Wednesday
As the South West wasn’t chuffed
The North West blew on Thursday
As the South East hardly puffed
The East and West blew Friday
As the others had a rest
The North and South blew Saturday
As the weekends were the best
The lot of them had Sunday
As the winds turned into storm
The whole of them had Monday off
As the week got back to norm

6. The Hunting Owl
Into the night sky
An owl took to wing
Beginning his hunting
For food home to bring
Over the hedges
He silently swoops
A large gust of wind
Turned him over in loops
On settling down
He eyed up a shrew
Fixed on his target
Claws knew what to do
He picked up his dinner
And dined by himself
Within an old barn
On dusty old shelf

4. Grow Well
The knowledge tree will need to grow
While we still have the need to know
Its roots secure to help it growing
Food it seeks our need for knowing
Thick stout trunk a brain or store
With many wonders to explore
Branches go at every angle
Many problems to untangle
A tree as this of many years
Survives by feeding from our tears
Sometimes joy at knowledge found
They fall like raindrops on the ground
Remember in the world out there
Try to learn and be aware
And if you’re able, go to college
To fertilize this tree of knowledge

4. Big fish
Where shimmering shoals of sardine play
By shipwreck on the seabed lay
Along comes shark some swim away
The rest get eaten if they stay
Within a porthole hanging out
An octopus I hear you shout
He’s hiding now what’s that about
Surprise attack without a doubt
A conger eel behind a rock
Fits like a glove or was it sock
Smaller fish come by to mock
But when he strikes they get a shock
Well large or small just be aware
The predators don’t mean to scare
They mean to eat you not play fair
So if you’re not a big fish do take care

5. Gone Fishing
Fishermen cast out their nets
We all in turn go fishing
Some will use a rod and line
While others fish by wishing
Some wish for so many things
Like numbers in a line
If the line is lacking some
Next time they say that’s fine
Others fish for gossip
So they can tell to others
No escape for anyone
Not even someone’s brothers
Fishing for a missing sock
The washer won’t release
Hiding out behind the drum
With fluff and bits of fleece

5. All Scone
Fresh baked scones all golden brown
With jam and clotted cream
Espresso coffee frothy whipped
For high tea what a dream
A platter full of sandwiches
Garnished green with salad
Piano in the corner plays
Another well known ballad
Torn between selections
Is it brown or maybe white?
Having cut the crusts away
Leaving nothing but one bite
Out came the fancy cake plate
Full of fresh baked scone
Six of them and four of us
I hope for more than one

5. Pension in a State
Has anybody seen it
Through wages it was paid
To be there for retirement
Each payment duly made
Told I would be quite cosy
With a pension from the state
And when I got to sixty-five
I’d get the going rate
They took a little extra
Called SERPS to put on top
Then told us all we could opt out
And SERPS would have to stop
Each time they’ve tried to change it
We end up getting less
And now they try to tell us all
Our pensions in a mess

5. My Bitten Finger
Much bolder than a lion
As crafty as a fox
That little furry hamster
I took home in a box
In the pet shop looking cuddly
Picked quickly didn’t linger
I should have seen the warning signs
When it bit my middle finger
I picked it for its cuteness
Dark brown with bright red eyes
I pointed out the one I’d picked
Imagine my surprise
It reared up where I pointed
Its whiskers started twitching
Then bit into my finger
For sure it needed stitching

4. Put Safely Away
Where has my wife put the car keys
I left at the side of my bed
She whisked them away in my sleeping
To put away safely she said
Stored away safely from burglars
Should one maybe call in the night
Hidden where no one could find them
Covered up well out of sight
She’s never been one for remembering
Things seem to slip right from her mind
Then turn up a year or two later
In places that no one could find
Time slips by fast in an like an instant
The summer’s sun turns into frost
She still stores away things for safety
But the car keys are listed as lost
