Ups And Downs

So precious are our days upon this earth,
From life's very start, at our moment of birth,
Through our childhood years, so free from cares,
Then into adulthood, with its many shares
Of ups and downs, and sadness and joy,
Children for us perhaps, a girl and a boy.

Into middle age, then way beyond,
If only we could wave a magic wand
And choose each step that we should take,
The right decisions, that we should make,
But alas, our judgement is not always right,
Sometimes we can fail to see the light.

So life will be filled with ups and downs,
Days of laughter and days of frowns,
But through our days, whether stormy or fine,
These precious days are still yours and mine.

CinemaScope

I was thinking that, when we get to heaven,
will we be made to sit in an auditorium,
and be shown on a huge 'CinemaScope' screen
a film of 'our life' from start to finish,
the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

Scaring?

Could be! Looking back, reviewing things,
things you'd rather not look back on.

Analysing each second, minute, and hour,
day, month and year.

Shrinking lower and lower into your seat.

No escape! No way out! - It would be compulsory!

How would you feel after all that 'revealing stuff'.

Modus Vivendi

Would you please just hold my hand,
When I cry out for this land,
Where such evil reigns, and hate
Meets a man at his own gate.

And our sadness and our fears,
Come from taunts and from harsh jeers,
As we try hard to convey,
How strong love is, everyday.

We should each smile, when we meet
The populace out on the street,
Then there'd be no need of fright,
Through the day, or through the night.

And joy would be on each face,
Of this whole vast human race,
When a sweet paradise is found,
On this earth's rough battleground.

New Seeds Will Be Sown

Bring in the harvest sheaves, and store
Them safely, on the barn's stone floor.
Let all who've worked to stack and bind,
On the farmhouse table, their cider, find.
They will heartily cheer the farmer's thanks,
Then get up to some quite jovial pranks,
While celebrating a long and hard day's reap,
Before falling soundly off to sleep.

The winter's grain is home and bound,
Taken with skill from the fertile ground.
And in time some new seeds will be sown,
As soon as the frost, snow and ice have flown.
The fields are left, just with rough stubble now,
Ready for furrows to be cut by the plough.
Next year these crops will grow once again,
Helped by the Lord, his sunbeams and rain.

The Food Of Love

What would you like for supper,
Some steak, with chips and peas,
Maybe, a nice brewed cuppa,
Or me, with lips that please.

You could have something spicy,
Like a curry or sweet and sour,
But these can be a bit spicy
And not good, at this late hour.

Perhaps a glass of beer, or shandy,
Or a brandy to fill the gap,
But, of course, that might make you randy,
Hey! Have that as your nightcap!

There's me, I'm sweet and slender,
And tender like the steak,
And if you put me in a blender,
A fantastic meal, I'd make.

The Singing River

The river tumbles onwards to the sea,
And rushes, racing over rocks and stones,
And boulders, branches, pebbles, sand and scree,
Singing so many melodies to me,
In whispering notes and thunderous roaring tones.

Music that lingers in the ears and mind,
Soothing confusing thoughts that come my way,
Easing all stress, so my spirit is resigned,
To watching its water ripple, swirl, glide and wind,
And giving a soft contentment to my day.

Always there, this river, which is never still,
And every night and day, how strong it flows,
Into each pool, each inlet and each new rill,
It does, my thirsty soul, with pleasure fill,
And sets my thoughts on peace, and my 'being' glows.

Four Seasons

Summer is sadly on the wane,
As, cool autumn creeps on stage.
The nights begin to impart a chill,
And strong winds go on the rampage.

Darkness sneaks in on us early,
As our evenings invite twilight,
Then we wake up to a greyish dawn,
Following a long and obscure night.

The dying season, is slowly turning,
The leaves to bright copper tones,
Each swooping down, to cover,
The heavily, moss clad, flagstones.

Thus preparing us all for winter,
Putting the whole earth to sleep,
Until our next spring awakens,
And new shoots begin to peep.

Whispering Breeze

A soft, whispering breeze, stirs the leaves on the trees,
And then suddenly, a gust, lifts the dry settled dust,
Things start moving about, and now there's no doubt,
That a storm's on the way, coming in from the bay.

So it's shutters up folks, there's no time now, for jokes,
Batten down all things loose, and bring in the old goose,
Or she'll screech out in fright. Now hold her quite tight.
There, the rain has begun, and the winds having fun.

It'll hang around for a bit, so we'll just wait and sit,
Until all's calm once again, with the going of the rain,
Clouds will part, sun will peep, and the foliage weep,
And a soft, whispering breeze, will stir the leaves on the trees.

Life Just Knocks Me Down

Some days I feel that 'life' just knocks me down,
Those harsh words said, your sharpness and your frown,
Remembering these things, what is the answer - how
Can I shake off those hurting actions now,
With each one forever chipping at my soul,
Sending me deep into this consuming hole
That I have carved into my life, when you
Departed for some other avenue.

I face this question with each day I greet,
How can I stay so upright on my feet,
When with a heavy heart, I try to face
The realisation that I must replace
You with another, Oh, how hard a task
For such as I, who hides behind a mask
With shattered thoughts I try hard to conceal.
Like an actor playing parts that are not real.

An Elusive Thing

We talk of beauty. Such an elusive thing.

How does one define it.

Everything has it, in some degree or other, even you and me,
which makes one reflect.

Is it what is seen or what is felt.
An inner concept,
or something that is only visible on the surface.
Who can tell.

Perhaps there is no answer to what is attractive, or how it attracts us,
As one person glimpses it, another sees nothing.

Maybe a meeting of 'like' spirits, an aura, a certain smile, an action,
an awareness, a perception.
We all see it in different shapes and forms.

I believe that beauty is from the soul, shining through a persons's essence.
