it's funny how things change
how the worries of yesterday
are left strewn across the remains
of this battlefield that we call home
it's funny how moments
big, explosive, lifechanging moments
can be forgotten
can be overlooked
in the wake of something lifethreatening
it's funny how the people you once trusted
the ones that are truly trustworthy
can be left behind the the blink of an eye
and that this double crossing can easily be done

I remember the seas of inquiries
and slippery plastic halls
I remember silent messages
conveyed through thousands of air molecules
and flickering eyes
I remember a hands-off world
and candles snuffed at birth
I remember fake concern
I remember lab rat status
I remember picking up the pieces
Of a world that wasn’t mine
I remember washing away tears that I had no business seeing
A doormat at age thirteen
I remember pills and the thrills
Of a world that was finally mine
I remember making rules
And controlling lives
