Gershon Hepner

Rashi And Tosafot

Rashi's
gushy;
he doesn't make us feel a dead loss a lot,
like Tosafot.

Love Will Grow

Linda’s response to this poem:

Nice to know, thanks mate so very much,
You really have the touchy feely touch.

Love That Heals

Love that heals
and soothes the soul,
resonant, repeals
the grief whose toll
no tears can drown
or sadness bury;
love alone
will make you merry,
soothing, healing,
so that grief
becomes a feeling
love makes brief.

Laughter and Tears

Laughter joins
whom tears attack,
two-faced coins
that back-to-back
oppose each others'
mood and style,
till laughter smothers
with a smile
the fears that, sad,
the tears repress,
and both are glad
to effervesce.

Robert Altman

His first job was as extra in
'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.'
Terrific way, that, to begin
a life in Hollywood's great city,
for both in MASH and Gosford Park
he demonstrated super-urban
humor, which a barking shark
might tell a seal was truly Thurban.

Weight Of History

However hard we try to shed
the weight of history, the last ten pounds
remain to weigh us down like lead
and spoil our taste like bitter coffee grounds.
However hard we try to mod-
ernize our diets we remain the host-
ages of history and God,
for neither disappear or can be lost.

Before Old Age

Young beauty forces love, and that’s a rape,
there’s far more willingness in middle-age
when lovers do not look for an escape,
together trapped before old age can rage.

It was Donne, in the elegy 'The Autumnal, ' who observed that 'Young Beauties force our love, and that's a Rape.'

Naked, Not Nude

The nude reveals her naked skin,
looking healthy, free and fresh,
but the naked girl will win
more attention with her flesh,
gaining sympathy for sin.
It’s the private revelation
of the feelings she reveals
which excite imagination
that the nude’s bare skin conceals,
Cheshire cat without a grin.

Foundation Of Despair

Only on the firm foundation of despair
can habitations of the soul be built
upon the sands of time in which we dare
to turn our backs on gratifying guilt.

Only on the firm foundation of despair
can we sometimes with dignity emerge
unwounded by illusions caused by care
and optimism that we’ve failed to purge.

Unable To Suppress

Unable to suppress
my dreams while she'd undress,
nor easily dismiss
the memory of her kiss,
forget
her wet,
wild passionate embrace,
when I recall her face,
I put them in a poem
so other men may know them.

The lines 'nor easily dismiss/ the memory of her kiss, ' are Ira Gershwin's words to music of George.
