Better than Candy
'No candy today.'
I had to tell her
as every day I told her
while passing melted
snow cones that stained
the sidewalk I could not
by her better shoes to
walk on. Not today.
Today we barely have
what we really needed
yesterday. Today is
months behind and
four years old.
'No candy.', I told
her as I kissed her.
'Better than candy.'
she said of my kiss.
Better than candy.
