My First Boyfriend

My first Boyfriend
was Stanley Gardner
whomI met in kindy
all thirty long years ago.
He wore silver braces
and thick jam jar glasses
whereas I had buck teeth
That jutted out a mile
and a mop of frizzy hair
but he declared his love for me
by sharing his vegemite sandwich
and orange juice popper
in the sandpit,
in the middle of the oval
And now 30 years on I meet him again
with his wife and child
He has the straightest of teeth

Sea Dragons

Along Australia’s meandering coastline
Live a bevy of remarkable sea life
But none so spectacular then
The elegant sea dragons
Part myth but weedy camouflage
Their long thin bodies like needles
And elongated snouts
Make the sea dragon hard to detect
Now endangered the leafy sea dragon
Is immortalised a the marine emblem
Of South Australia
Like their cousins the sea horses
They live in the depths of the sea
Male dragons conceive and maintain the brood
Until they hatch and whilst mother dragon
Swim nearby like the imperial guards of old
Guarding their offspring against predators
So should you ever be lucky enough
You might cast an eye on this elegant creature
The supermodels of the deep!

Fishy Tales

Fishy Tales

Tire of darting and weaving
Amongst the shadowy caverns of their coral stone lair
Hidden from sight by slippery sea weed
Waving their arms amongst the colourful sea anemone
Or whether Sunfish worship the sun
From the depths of the sea
Or simply glide by playing hide and seek
In the mysterious deep
Or follow the trail left my migrating turtles
Or the tit bits that the Remora chases
On the back of a shark
Or whether the Great white shark is really
The merciless predator of the deep
