The Great Pretender

As a child, I pretended I had magical powers
To make friends,
I pretended I was psychic
So friends could consult me,
I pretended I had strange illnesses
To avoid the chlorinated swimming baths
On wet grey Mondays..........................

Dance, dance, dance with me!
Why do you look at me so strangely?
What’s wrong with wanting to dance?
I’m doing my best please
Give me a chance

Give me one day back to prove to you
How I used to arc through the air,
My lithe form a whirling colour
My legs whipping up a storm
While I cartwheel, twist and pirouette
In time, God, always in time,
Across the stadium.

I am used to audiences, all eyes on me
Yes me, me, I am here you know,
Why won’t you let me dance?

The ward is so noisy, I long to hear music,
