Smart Apes
The trees are leaving;
lurched away;
heading magnetic north;
sap cooled
and cold.
The elms,
uproot themselves;
and go.
Shade is gone.
The house is warm less;
night prolonged.
I see birds laboring west
unclear and direction-less.
Nature's abandonment
is profound.

I Would Be
I would for you
be the summer wind
caressing your face.
I would be cooling rain
swirling jasmine bouquet
pressing round
that delicious mouth of yours.
.
I would be hope if you need that
in a storm
the port;
the beacon in the night
the soothing hand
on your fevered brow.
Your lover
when you need that,
a steadying hand

A Handkerchief Surrenders
If I can but see
those reaching arms before me,
feel flat against my chest
your welcoming breasts;
for me this would content.
If I could but feel
that dizzying quivering
your touch makes,
that for me would content.
If I can see
my own soul stirrings
in your beckoning eyes,
my contour
fitting your contour
perfectly,

A River Flows
Where does the river flow
if not to you?
How deep its depths
if these
are not yours?
How broad is the river bank?
Broad enough
for the tug-boats
to push my heart along.
If there are fish in the river,
they sing your name
open-mouthed,
fish-style,
making tiny bubbles float
up, up to the river surface
where they pop

Driving My Roads
I pull the truck out
and head for the open road-
our relationship
splattered all along the highway;
our history written on the highway signs;
The Good:
Curves Ahead
Soft Shoulder
Yield
Slippery when wet
The Bad:
Under Construction
Fines Double
Do Not Cross the Double Yellow
Uneven Highway
Stop

Gauzy Time- Elena's Story
I'll take Time,
twist it into a toy balloon;
hold it aloft at our favorite restaurant;
I' ll take our Past and mellow it
amid the anniversary toasts-
all of its rough spots smoothed out.
Place before me Future's Bliss
ready to receive the kiss
which aligns our stars in neat rows
above our head-board
where Moonlight and Suns play;
this kiss our portal
to that eternal Now where
Time our friend
takes seconds and expands them
into eons

Ballerina Style
Lift me down again
that always feels new;
Twirl me down again
to cure my dizziness.
Turn my pedestal upside down
finding me with Humilities Smile
on my upside face.
Can a man walk on one leg?
Can you hear the sound of one hand clapping?
Can you hear a butterfly sing?
You can.
Can anything compare to
the lift me down,
the dizzy cure
the upside down pedestal

Dream Time
I'll not take a single kiss from you
for that is too few
I'll not go silent
for words are one way
of loving you.
I'll not stray far from your arms
for they feel bereft without you
swaying in them.
I'll lift you
to these lips
and feel you slide
down my body
exhaling.
I turn you
like a star rotating
for you have
a similar light.

She Said
So I said to him
'Why did you do it'
and he said 'because I wanted to.
'Did you' I said, 'think about others?
And he said 'yes? '
'Well then, ' I said
'why did you do it?
He said 'because I wanted to
and no one got hurt.
'Yes, ' I said 'this time
but what about next time?
'Well' he said 'no one got hurt
and I will be more careful next time.'
'How do I know there won't be a next time?
and he said

Anger- Linda's Story
There is this angry place
she said
that's been inside me since
my earliest days.
And when I need
I go there
for power
and resistance.
If ever
someone
hurts me
I let it out
to go free
and kill
or hurt back
and allow
it to take retribution.
