Couplings
All life seems a coupling
two by twos
from Noah's ark
to romancing;
triangles we understand
can intrude-
break couples apart
who reconcile
in the long while;
or not.
But in growing up
all this can be confusing.
How to raise a family
if the married two
cannot handle child
who makes three and a triangle real?
And we know some people cannot

Makes You Laugh and Cry At the Same Time-2
Quasimodo was in the stocks
and Esmeralda felt pity for him
and gave him water.
They release him
and he tries to get back to the church.
He has to run the gauntlet of the crowd
who spit on him
beat him as he passes
curse him,
bloody him.
He gets the church door
staggering
as rocks pummel him from behind
and slams the doors
and with his back to the door
raises his hand to cover his mouth
and murmurs'

Beachy Sand
I am beachy sand,
ground down mountain dust,
washed here by wet rain
to edge-bound shores
where I can feel the footprints
of millions who
come to me
for solace
walking my shores,
making love,
reconciling,
talking
departing
loving.
I am beachy sand-

My Only
You are my Only;
the One.
My Heart clamors down
from its dusty shelves
over-joyed
pounding true for you.
My doilies fold.
I see deep pools in your eyes
and swim there
splashing up
huge helpings of my soul.
I'm Metaphor, Simile and Noun
for you;
lift my soul skirts;
stand naked before you;

Why It Matters
'Sit with me here.' she said
'It gives me the reassurance that I exist.
'How does that work? ' I said.
She said 'I spin off into my self
if I lose contact with something or someone else
outside myself.
Sometimes I am ok with the inner spin
but it gets scary sometimes and I feel nauseous
and lose my bearings where I feel vulnerable to
monsters and animals and horrible voices and people
talking.
'If I get there it is difficult to get back.'
'So, ' he said 'who knew a touch could mean so much? '
'Well' she said
'it does.'

Dance Cheat
You are my dance-time lover
the one who dances dances dances;
while I sit at the table
with my husband.
I am bathed in music
and incipient Infidelity
because it is you I crave.
In my mind I get to move with you
your face always in change:
but in your dance
I reach for the evening sky;
expand,
moving with the energies,
losing myself to rhythms there.
Is it cheating?

Hearts Door
I knock on your hearts door
and the sign says 'don't disturb.'
'
I slip a note over the transom
and its floats back 'undeliverable.'
I sleep outside your hearts door,
day and night,
my ear cupped to hear rustlings.
I've rehearsed what I'll say if the door opens.
You'll take me in your arms.
I'll knock every day on your hearts door.
I'll sit.
I'm patient
I am not going any where.

Don't Want to Be
I don't want to wait until I'm dead
to tell people I love them.
Don't want to be deceased
then open up an see
me
and things I have done wrong.
Don't want no death bed scenes
and teary eyed I'm sorrys.
Don't want to be stupid about
the little things
like walking away
from a fight.
Don't want to have to twist myself
all out of shape to convince myself
I'm right.

Medical Virginity
I undress each month for my doctor
and he either feigns disinterest
or is blind to what he sees.
This is a particular kind of intimacy;
one where I undress on demand
and he looks
but does not see.
I turn,
wanting some acknowledgment
that he sees me
wants me.
But he does not acknowledge my need.
He touches me then
in intimate spots
and I feign
not feeling his hands
which he pre-warms just for me

Touching
She has a four inch scar-
vertical-
from above her navel,
to her almost there.
Slightly raised
it has it's smooth parts
and its bumpy parts
which I feel most nights;
each time wondering if
the bumpy will get smooth
or the smooth bumpier.
It at times
seems to signify
her good half
and her better half.
She doesn't notice
