Recipe For Friendship

Take a large amount of trust
Blend in a good measure of honesty
Crack a joke or two to taste
Sift out the truth from a mixed bag of gossip and rumour
Mix well, but do not stir
Sweeten with compliments
Thoroughly warm with goodwill
But do not boil
If it does start to simmer
Allow to cool
Give out generous portions
Serve with smiles

And Now?

All gone now, all gone
That innocence
That cantering youth
That hope that held the head so high
Has hardened into now
And now
I curse my leaden legs
My tired eyes
And wonder where the newness went

All done now, all done
I’ve seen it all
False-promising truth
Keeps hope on hold and hand on heart
Head hunting where and how
And how
I purse my laughless lips
My wrinkled cheeks
And wonder at the life I’ve led

If I Had A Dog

If I had a dog
I’d call him Butch
I’d hug him hard
And love him much

If I had a dog
I’d teach him tricks
Throw him balls
And chuck him sticks

If I had a dog
He’d roll on command
I’d tickle his tummy
And he’d lick my hand

If I had a dog
We’d splash through brooks
Roam through the park
And chase the ducks

Rose at 21

Ten past eight
That warm September night
In an antiseptic room
Your first tentative cry
Celebrating your entry
Into this world
Blonde-streaked, pink-cheeked
You had to be
Rose
And like the flower
Over time you have grown

Bright and shiny in your early years
Then sprouting those protective thorns
During early teenage
Where tight-budded
You hid your beauty
From the world

Now this late blossoming

Schoolspeak

‘S cool, man,
It’s the best,
Gotta keep your interest.
Talkin’ is the name of the game
And if you wanna ply
You gotta speak the same.
SCHOOLSPEAK,
‘S cool, man,
Understand me if you can.
P.E.’s bad,
Maths is vile,
I tell you, man,
Maths aint my style.
Art’s a doddle,
R.E.’s a doss,
Gotta show’em who’s the boss.
SCHOOLSPEAK,
‘S cool, man,
It’s the language they wanna ban.
Science is grotty,
