Pinning The Butterfly

Trying to hold onto
and preserve what one
loves and feels deeply,
is like trying to pin the
butterfly.
The collector knows
the butterfly can only
thrive for a very short
time, freely in the world.
And so he pins its
unique beauty in
place for what he hopes
is forever
Is this what we try to
accomplish with art and
music; with our written
words and the love
we feel?

Cat In The House

Oh to be a house cat
snug and smug inside
All the world beyond the glass
hers, to be surmised
Safe inside among her pride
of humans whom she rules
the house cat purrs and preens
and all is seen
through eyes of emerald jewels
Give her food, give her a bed
fresh water every day
A clean box of sand to
follow nature's way
A furry mouse, a piece of string
and perhaps a little ball
Just as well, a paper bag
to scoot across the hall
But mostly the house cat
seeks from you
the love and admiration,
