Sacred Ibis

the sacred ibis
flocking on the parapet
she used to live there
I still hear my daughter's laugh
emigrated to other climes

Bowl

Bowls
of chipped
enamel
singing loudly -
Rain brought us huddling together for warmth.

On primus stove, sheep offal is cooking;
dunking bread husks
bowls in use) :
Only
meal.

Freedom

the caged lion sniffs the air
barrier lifted
freedom is a step away
an unknown concept

we rush out headlong
embracing perceived freedom
yet hopelessly lost
in idealized pursuit

Cape Town Weather Forecast

Lighting jagged, infernal fierce
The darkness pierce
Streaking the sky
Charged currents fly

The rain drops, round and sweet, plump down
On a parched town
Rivulets run
Children have fun

The sun peaks out from behind cloud
Joy! Shouts aloud
Welcome warmth soak
A comfort cloak

Innocence: Promise of Eternity

your innocence is obvious
artless, trusting, pure, timeless
for all to bear witness to
willingly, eager, keen, often
urging us to invest in others
inviting, entice, believe, future
filling our imagination
reaching, embrace, accept, now
all encompassing Grace
shining, empower, promise, eternity

The Smell of the Sea

the smell
of the sea
is overpowered by the
watermelon fragrance of newly mowed lawn

bobtails
hunting for unseen tit-bits
among shrubs -
an earthworm becomes a bone of contention

a butcherbird swoops -
swallowing the spoil

if only the bobtails had agreed to share...
there's enough for all of us to go around

Albatross

Like an albatross,
Past clings like dross.
Round my bent neck
it hangs in check
by my golden cross.

Standards from long ago;
culture difficult to forego -
I strive to survive
just the daily jive
of struggles to and fro.

I pull out the rusty nail
of old doctrines which impale
the coffin of my life.
Objections are rife,
but my soul isn't for sale.

Do Not Put Asunder

When we met briefly,
it was not you chiefly
that I was seeking.
I have dreamt of love
sent from above.
Our ages peaking.

As drops of rain
wash away pain,
you are the rainbow.
Each day we learn
that now is our turn.
In each other we grow.

Do not put asunder
that which lies under
the external veneer.
Joined by love
by the Grace from above.
To each very dear.
