Being a Mom
A woman conceives
Having wondrous expectations
For a child yet to be
Knowing only that it’ll
Be unique and little
Will the child she has inside
Have the characteristics
Of both mom and dad…
As her body changes physically
She wonders about the possibilities
When the day of birth approaches
Anticipation of happiness
Outshines any thoughts of pain
The time is now…many hours pass
Before the child is in her grasp
A miracle of creation
With lungs filled with dependency

Winter Weariness
Seems that we've been waiting ever so long
For the cold mounting winter snows to be gone
Oh sure, at first the dazzling flakes were intriguing
But the novelty strayed after months of freezing
When snow was just right for packing and rolling
Round spheres grew with a push … too big for bowling
Just right for building a solid fort or a plump snowman
Winter cold was a generous giver of an Arctic game plan
It is true, we've had some fun with friends sledding
And making snow angels with arms and legs spreading
The snow gave a sparkle when Christmas lights glowed
Candy canes and mistletoe appeared when it snowed
A February thaw had minds and hearts envisioning spring
In a day or two it was more piles of snow that it did bring
As snowblowers blew and snow shovels shoveled again
Weariness became an unwelcome mate that chilled the veins

Fading Sunset
In the scheme of scenes…a sunset is the most beautiful
Scattering rays of sunlight… intensifying glowing hues
Suspended in an atmosphere of minutes dispersing
Daylight hours come to an end…with a spectacular view
Praising the grand panorama … majestic colors transfuse
Red, orange, and fuchsia …ignite a dimming velvet sky
The calming sunset is a crescendo in an emotional tide
Shadows envelop blind recognition as embers slowly die
The loss of illumination induces a certain spark of sadness
The silenced strings of a symphony no longer enthral
Flickering candles glow providing an aura of consolation
Comfort pales with a whisper from an ascending spiral
Neither moon nor stars above can replace the thrill
All efforts to placate fail to duplicate the radiant blaze
Twilight weaves wakefulness into a numb blanket of sleep
Darkness lift as sunlight filters through a misty haze

Back-to-School Shopping
The calendar is changing its expression
Summer days are getting shorter and cooling
The months are flipping over in succession...
Time to prepare for September schooling
Boys and girls are eager to purchase
new duds for a brand-new school year
Can't forget a new lunchbox and thermos
New shoes will surely shift motion into gear
Starting at mid-day…eager and carefree
beginning to look for a proper fit
Can't figure out why same sizes vary
Try everything on before deciding on it
From each fashion display we forge forward
Feet are dragging…patience is running thin
Children are misbehaving…a bribe is offered
Improve and get a treat that'll make you grin

The Safe House
Thank God for a way to escape from the shadows
A refuge where battered women rebuild their tomorrows…
The undisclosed location is free from violent threats
It is a place where women wake without cold sweats
Thank God for a caring staff who was there to guide
People who worked in a place to protect and provide…
Caring people with kind quantities and an angelic heart
Volunteers played with kids... enabling fear to depart
Thank God for the guidance that was given each day
One step at a time, starting to heal and say I’ll be okay
Giving women the confidence to breathe and reorganize
Reassurance gave strength to overcome and revitalize
Thank God for the wonderful women I met in this sanctuary
They had a common trait; bravely doing what was necessary
I recognized myself in each pillar of hope wanting to survive
Mental bruises were visible; we were all glad to be alive
