Between Africa & Europe
We sat on the rocks of the islanded Nile
Somewhere below Aswan
The inkwell water smooth running between our toes
The silt of Africa behind Aswan's mighty hand
Why did we leave?
Why did we come home?
Between Africa & Europe my mind halts
In this poem of last returns.
There we are placed:
I swimming
You watching
The light of the Sahara still burnishing our skin
The cold dark depths of the river
Hiding our last desires
And they will never resurface beyond this picture
I treasure here

The Light Is Going
The light is going
way over the small wood
it shrinks from the ploughed
gullies and blackbird runs
deep between the hawthorn
gilding still the leftover
harvest straw, the treetops
threading the november dusk
into stripped and lonely lifelines
On the hill's horizon
two lightning blasted trunks
await their final rest
like an old couple
in God's golden funeral parlour
only the old railway
holds a claim on tomorrow
all else is nature's slow sleep
turning its nose into the cold
pillow of night
