In vain [În zadar]

I watch the moon, but it's in vain,
And in my sorrow, so insane,
I'm sighing for I want him still;
But he is gone – moon needs to rest
And with its ray, sweet, bright and blessed,
Is setting now behind the hill.

In the ashes

In the ashes there abides
Very often a small flame
And a secret love resides
In the soul of every dame.

And the passions burned away
My poor heart that fled to you,
But the love in it will stay
And for ever will be true.

O, Death [O, moarte]

O, Death! Do come and creep
Into my empty bosom and put at ease my brain
To hear the howling tempest, which seems to sing in pain,
How strolls throughout the desert, pushed by the winds insane,
I'd like to rest for ever...To fall,
To fall asleep.

Watching a portrait [La un portret]

I lose myself when watch your face
As if in holy joy I melt,
And in my soul returns with grace
The longing that on earth I felt.

And with a love complete and great
Your portrait gently I caress,
And I forget our feud and hate,
And I forget my sore distress.

Ah! Run away... [Ah! Fugi...]

Ah! Run away, new lands pursue,
For if you loved me, you'd get stuck
And many plagues would fall on you
For in this life I have no luck.

A dreadful curse was placed on me
And what I love can never stay...
Ah! Run away and let me be!
For I was born in a wrong day.

You left... [Ai plecat...]

You left, your longing lured your mind,
And went ahead, that was your lot,
My raging love you left behind
And quickly utterly forgot.

With broken heart and spinning head
I watched you going far away,
And many bitter tears I shed
On your dear footprints in the clay.

Ah! Go away... [Ah! Du-te...]

Ah! Go away, my bitter sigh,
Go, go away, for ever fly;

And that I wail, my sight is blurred,
Wherever go don't say a word.

Don't stop and be attentive, please,
Not to get wasted in the breeze;

In the wide world be swift and strong,
My longing guides you all along,

Get lost in crowd and then beware
So that no one can find you there.

I'm aware your love... [Ştiu c-amorul tău...]

I'm aware your love is great
And you suffer deeply, too,
That is why I do not wait,
But I run away from you.

Don't you see that my own soul
Is capricious and insane,
That my fate has a bad goal,
Which I'm frightened to explain?

And in life I hate a lot
When I'm cherished for my worth,
To love him who loves me not
Is my fate upon the earth.

I left... [Am plecat...]

I left, didn't look behind,
Without grieving too much time,
To erase you from my mind,
To forget your love sublime.
And I followed the world's ways
Without purpose I strolled by,
Didn't miss the good old says,
For we parted didn't cry.
If I spent a long time there
I can really not discern
For with longing and despair
To you quickly now return.

If I could (II) [De-aş putea (II)]

If I could reveal to thee
All the love I use to hide,
Time and space, I guarantee,
That in it they would reside.

And if blessed I were sometimes
With words handsome from above
To assure you in sweet rhymes
Of my hot and gentle love,

Time and space would linger here
Without willing to depart
For they'd like so much to hear
The confession of my heart.
