Deadly Tsunami!

It was the day after Christmas
when Earth's mighty shoulders
shrugged together
to transform time

Lifting a big wave
no matter the name
shifting weight hidden
beneath
Indian Ocean

Beaches Asian and African
filled with children
people relaxing and playing
caressed by sun

Too late for too many
came the warning cry
as water's heavy hands
slammed

The Day Earth Moved

Birth, Death, Rebirth

Television news reports
a friend’s brother has died
I telephone his home, a stranger’s voice -
then my friend says “hello”
we reminisce his brother’s adventure -
sharing sadness; laughter; tears

A TV special about our universe depicts the birth,
death, rebirth of stars, planets, galaxies

Christmas cards - with photos
of families; past year stories
new babies; friends leaving

Outside the window - frozen shadows,
serpentine outline of nude shad tree
a tree with white flowers - each spring until last

Nearby, two heated birdbaths
quench thirst, give life

These times

And soon the vaults were empty
of the stuff we call money
as many lost sleep at night
in a dream of deep fright

Horrific story after story was told
by folks we know, and in the news
by folks starting careers so new
by folks growing tired and old

Then came a call so bold
carried by The Voice of old
to be learned from our Earth
in these times of dearth

Listen to the call my friends:
water for life
water for all
water for survival
water for food

Christmas Eve Presumption

I remember years past at this time
joining with friends sublime
A-caroling we did go from house to house
of those old alone people sitting inside at home
“We’re bringing some holiday cheer to the old shut ins”
I remember the 30ish leader saying with a grin
At one house surrounded by trees we stood at front door
singing loudly song after song with smiles and glee
The house door flew open to reveal a thin elderly man
who waved at us to go away and leave him be
But singing we continued with conviction and fervor
to bring hope and joy to this sad lonely figure
Then the slippered old man stepped out into the snow
and stuffed bills in the pocket of the nearest fellow
And on Christmas eve, this lonely old man yelled
“Get off my property! ”
I guess he was quietly resting, or writing, or enjoying a good read
or maybe watching his favorite Christmas show on TV
