Mary Havran

Before The Dawn

Before dawn wind rushes
driving night’s chill westward
so vestiges of darkness
send shivers along my spine.
Facing east I fight
cold’s piercing urge to wince,
and huddled await morn’s blush.
No wind or cold may dissuade
my eyes from pending purchase
of that precious brief pink palette,
clouds trimmed in rosy piping
which dress the sky at dawn.

Time is Not a River

Time is not a river
Nor a ticking clock
Nor an hourglass

We cannot save time
We cannot spend time
We cannot borrow time
We cannot buy time
We cannot cheat time

Time is not a gift
Time is not our friend
Nor our enemy
Time is not on our side
Time is not ours in any sense
Save for the single second
That holds our full attention
Then slips forever beyond grasp

ONE, TWO, THREE of LOVE

If there were only ONE song
Possessed of every note of choice
It could not match the music
Of the Lovesong in your voice

If there were only TWO stars
Owning all light of the skies
They could not match the brilliance
Of the Lovelight in your eyes

If there were only THREE words
That your own ears ever knew
May they proceed from my lips
As I whisper “ I Love You, ”

Diamonds Disappear

This morning there were diamonds
Dazzling the tree branches
Simple drops of dew
Transected by morning sunlight
Merely dewdrops
Waiting to dissolve

Chance circumstance alone allowed
Discovery of this treasure
Briefly on display

Waking just then
Making my way to the window
Just as the sun
Made its way to the place
Wear dewdrops were
Making for magic
Momentarily

Till diamonds disappeared

Nothing In Heaven

Nothing
I mean not a Thing
Literally
No Things
Can You Imagine
That lack
Of Things?

Everything on the Earth
Stays on the Earth
Or under earth
If that be your preference
But nothing
Not one thing
Gets packed

No Things in Heaven
Let me say it
One more time
Not

Thunderstorm Providence

There was a storm and night
darkness and fright
Then light and awareness
as though inspired by human plight
sparked awakening
which rippled through my mind
and subtly, softly, almost secretly
found a place to stay

this storm ignited light
expanded, grew
until terror ceased to be
and serenity reached a height
of almost unimaginable fullness
almost a cosmic unity
almost infinity
almost heaven
almost God
and almost authentically me

Color Scheme

Powdered sugar dusted donut clouds
Buoyant beneath the brilliant blue
Salmon shades slivering layered stone
Eons exposed in each earthen view

Varied verdant leaves interlace to
Toupee tree trunk troupes arrayed amass
Floral flags festooned in rainbow hues
Wave over emerald seas of greenest grass

As avocado agrees with apricot
So salmon sidles near clear sky-blue
Color scheme is part of nature’s plot
To bring heaven’s vision into view

The River Raine

Today I met a woman
Who died four years ago
She spoke to me for hours
As though she knew my soul

She took me by the hand
Led me along a stream
Where trout swam in sparkling waters
Under clear crystalline skies

This woman shared the magic
Of years of circumspect living
And artfully crafted writing
Precisely gem set words

She dwells now in brightness
I could but pause and glimpse
Through my own dark glass
Her poems the only light

Spring Flowers ~ Tulips

Tulips shyly smiling, greet the spring
Tightly closed when at
First we meet
Tulips slowly opening, begin to sing
Gaining volume
Ever sweet

No longer shy, as days grow longer,
Raising their heads
They begin to flirt
Tulips dressed in many a color
Breezes swirling
Each floral skirt

Tulips, brazen painted hussies,
Part their bright lips trying to seduce
The busy buzzing bees
Far too bold for dainty tussies
Vibrant Tulip flowers produce
Visions certain to please

zPt #2 Hope

Hope
Not wind ~ but breeze
Not boat ~ but raft
Not fact ~ but presumption
Yet evident
and constant
... if I but consent
to keep on trying

Mary Havran

(Written when poet was eleven years old)

A note to the reader: I have recently spent some time revisiting my earliest poetic efforts and upon
Reflection have decided to post some on this sit. Poems whose titles are prefixed with the designation “zPt” are poems written during my preteen years. I hope you find them interesting.
